Basalt Roving: The Foundation of Basalt Products
Basalt roving serves as the fundamental building block for a wide range of basalt-based products. It is created from natural volcanic basalt rock through a high temperature melting process and subsequent fiber production. Here's how the process works:
-
Raw Material: Natural volcanic basalt rock is used as the primary raw material for producing basalt roving. This rock is abundant in nature and serves as the source of basalt's unique properties.
-
Melting: The basalt rock is melted in a furnace at temperatures ranging from 1450 to 1500 degrees Celsius. This hightemperature process transforms the solid rock into a molten state, preparing it for further processing.
Continuous Spinning: The molten basalt material is then forced through platinum/rhodium crucible bushings using a method known as continuous spinning. This process involves passing the molten material through tiny openings in the bushings, resulting in the formation of continuous fibers. These fibers are known as basalt roving.
Basalt roving, with its continuous fibers, serves as a versatile starting point for creating a variety of basalt-based products, including:
-
Basalt Chopped Fiber: Basalt roving can be processed further to create chopped basalt fibers. These fibers are used as reinforcement in various applications, enhancing the strength and durability of materials.
-
Basalt Fabrics: Basalt roving can be woven into fabrics for use in the textile industry. Basalt fabrics offer unique properties, including fire resistance and high tensile strength, making them suitable for various applications.
-
Basalt Rebar: Basalt roving is used to produce basalt rebar, which serves as an alternative to traditional steel rebar for reinforcing concrete structures. Basalt rebar provides excellent tensile strength and resistance to corrosion.
Basalt Mesh: Basalt roving can also be transformed into basalt mesh, which is used for reinforcement in construction applications. It offers properties such as corrosion resistance and durability
In essence, basalt roving serves as the foundation from which diverse basalt products are derived. The versatility and unique properties of basalt fibers make them valuable in a range of industries, including construction, textiles, and manufacturing, where durability, strength, and resistance to environmental factors are essential.
